PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY ALKERMES has announced that it is to reduce its staff by between 100 and 130 over the next two years.

The company said the decision was made following a reduction in demand “for certain pharmaceutical products that have become generic or are nearing the end of their commercial life”.

The company hopes to achieve the jobs losses through a combination of natural attrition, voluntary redundancy and compulsory redundancy.

Headquartered in Dublin, Alkermes currently employs 440 people between Dublin and Athlone.

Local TD Denis Naughten said it was a “dark day” and the job losses would “take approximately €4 million in wages out of the local economy”.

The pharmaceutical plant was formally known as Elan, but the businesses were combined in September 2011.
