'I'm not a nutcase': Dublin man burps his way to international competition

Martin Wilde was invited to take part in professional burping competition Ruttosound in Italy after he uploaded his 20 second burp.

A DUBLIN MAN has been invited to take part in a renowned, invite-only burping competition in Italy after organisers spotted an impressive video of his 20 second burp online.

Mike Wilde is trying to get his name in the record books for the longest burp in the world. He first came up with the idea after letting out a mammoth burp in front of some work mates.

“One of the lads said “that has to be some kind of record” so we looked it up and the longest burp is 18 seconds. I thought I could well beat that.”

He uploaded a video of himself holding a burp for 20 seconds and it came to the attention of the organisers of a professional burping competition that takes place in Italy in front of an audience of 20,000 people.

‘Ruttosound’ is held at the Hard Rock Beer Festival in Italy each year and is also broadcast on Italian television. Only 15 people are taking part in it this year and participation is by invite only.

Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Wilde said he was surprised to be approached about it but now he has his eye on the massive trophy and cash prize on offer. The organisers are covering his travel and accommodation for the duration.

The competition is broken down into four parts – the longest burp, the loudest, a challenge to burp out assigned sentences and a freestyle part.

Though he said it is not really a competition he can train for, he has been practising his burps when no one else is around. He claims his longest burp has lasted 26 seconds.

“This whole burping thing, I’ve always been able to do it, probably from annoying my sister as a teenager,” he said.

Wilde revealed the secret to his impressive oral flatulence is a combination of chocolate and fizzy drinks like Dr Pepper.

“The chocolate in particular, that’s why I’m able to hold it for so long, because the chocolate stops my throat from getting sore.”

Though this Dublin man is intent on winning the competition, he is well able to have a laugh about it. He wanted us to stress that he’s “not a nutcase” and realises it’s probably silly behaviour for a 27-year-old man but it’s all a bit of fun.

“It was just one of those random things, messing with friends. So my advice to anyone else is to share those times you’re messing on Twitter – you never know what might come out of it!”

The competition takes place on 23 June.
