ENDA KENNY QUASHED speculation that he would be interested in taking up the role as European Council president.
When asked on RTE’s The Week in Politics whether he would find it difficult to turn down such an offer and take over from Herman Van Rompuy, he said: “I would be flattered, but my mandate is here.”
Last year, there was speculation that Taoiseach Enda Kenny was being “seriously talked about” for the job in Europe.
Not interested
Today, however, he ruled out that he would be interested in the job, stating: “I would never turn my back on the Irish, they are our people…”.
He went on to say that he believed that it was a great “privilege” to be in government and serve the people of Ireland, adding that sometimes “far away hills might look greener” but reiterated that he believed his mandate was here in Ireland.
He said that he believed his government have had to “work harder” than any of their predecessors in relation to where the country was economically when they came into power.
Election
Speaking about the next election he said that Fine Gael would “fight a good case” adding that he was eager to be voted in another term.
“Back-to-back would be great. It is not easy to achieve and we will be judged by the people in just over 104 weeks time”, he said.
