'Fighting fit and fit to fight': Defence Forces train in 1940s Ireland

THE DEFENCE FORCES film-making unit put together this short training clip back in the 1940s and it was unearthed by the army’s current audio-visual unit this week.

Entitled Spotlight on the Army: Soldiers must be fit, the video warns watchers that “if you want to go a-soldiering, you better not be afraid to get your feet wet”.

It then goes on to show how soldiers get their “perfect muscular control” by participating in gymnastics, boxing and swimming.

According to the current Press Office, there have been “quite a bit” of developments in PT training since, as can be seen from this video from 2012.
