Galway stabbing: Man (60s) released without charge

The victim has been named locally as 39-year-old Christy McGrath.

A MAN IN his mid-60s has been released without charge by gardaí investigating a fatal stabbing in the Mervue area of Galway in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The victim has been named locally as 39-year-old Christy McGrath.

Galway Bay FM reports that the man is believed to have been living at the address where the incident took place, at Cardinal Cushing Road.

He was found with stab wounds at the house and taken to University Hospital Galway, where he was later pronounced dead.

The man who was arrested was detained at the scene and taken to Galway Garda Station for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed this afternoon he had been released without charge. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Local councillors said there was shock in the area in the wake of the stabbing.
