Kids in the back misbehaving? Honda's new gadget might just help

We take a look at CabinWatch and CabinTalk which debuted at this year’s NAIAS.

THIS WEEK WE are checking out two new connectivity technologies that improve safety and keep the family connected.

What is it?

CabinWatch and CabinTalk are two safety technologies that debuted in the new Honda Odyssey MPV at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. Together, they basically create a ‘nanny cam with an intercom’ for your car.

What does it do?

Using a camera, CabinWatch lets those up front keep tabs on all passengers (even in the dark, thanks to infrared) via the eight-inch high-resolution Display Audio touchscreen interface. CabinTalk then enables those in the front seats to talk those in the second and third rows via individual speakers and the rear entertainment system headphones.

Why would I want it?

Well, it’s a great way of keeping an eye on the kids. When you spy the kids acting up via the touchscreen, you can calmly tell them to behave without having to turn around and yell to be heard at the back.

You can also use the system to praise good behaviour or to play family games! It could just make travelling with a van full of kids that bit more civilised and relaxing.

What do users say?

There are no user reviews yet. But unsurprisingly, the manufacturers are very positive. Honda had this to say:

In-vehicle connectivity is taken to a whole new “family connectivity” concept. Old-fashioned family connectivity – sometimes called a conversation – is made easier than ever with the quietest cabin in the class, and is augmented with a multitude of new connected-vehicle features and technologies.

CabinWatch and CabinTalk will be available in the US Honda Odyssey, but expect to see it migrate into European models soon.
