AN IRISH MAN living in Australia is receiving treatment at a Sydney hospital following a serious assault in the early hours of Monday morning.

Kieran Cahill, a 26-year-old from Kerry, was attacked as he tried to intervene in a verbal altercation between a group of men and women.

He had been admitted to intensive care in an intubated state but is now said to be recovering well.

Police in New South Wales said the victim was “set upon” by three men out the front of a nightclub on Goulburn Street at about 1.50am on 25 February. His attackers had made “inappropriate comments” to a number of females in the vicinity and Cahill intervened, according to authorities.

“He was punched in the face a number of times and knocked unconscious. One of the males then stomped on the victim’s head a number of times.”

Michael Cahill, the victim’s father, told Radio Kerry today that his son is recovering from a number of surgeries.

“I just received a text from him there a while ago,” he said. “He was sorry he wasn’t able to contact us. He’s been going for operations…so he couldn’t contact us.

“He’s had surgery on his throat. He got a tube in this throat – his throat got stood on. He had surgery on his jaw, which was shattered in a couple of places.”

Two men, aged 24 and 26, were arrested shortly after the incident but a third person evaded police.

The 24-year-old has been charged with reckless grievous bodily harm in company. The 26-year-old was released without charge and police are still searching for the third suspect.

Police have released an image of a person who may be able to assist with inquiries in relation to the identity of the third man. The person is described as an adult male of Pacific Islander appearance, and is thought to have been wearing a green shirt, shorts, and black shoes. Investigators would like to interview the person about the matter.

  • Every weekend without fail there is trouble outside Scruffy Murphy’s and because of the name people always assume it’s the Irish. It is open 24 hours a day and as you can imagine it attracts all sorts. I’ve been there twice and that is two too many times. I don’t know how this place still has a license.

That said this poor guy tried to do the honourable thing, I hope he recovers and these animals are brought to justice. Prevention is better than cure and this horrendous dump needs to be shut down or have its trading hours reduced.

As a wise Scotsman once said to me when I first came over, nothing good ever happens after midnight in Sydney.

    • I stuck up for a aboriginal guy outside the spot one night and it nearly kicked off..Ozzies are are the biggest racists i ever came across and hate the Irish, But the pacific islanders/Ozzie guys are always causing trouble because these guys are huge..and feel they can say what they like to people, add drink into the equation and this what happens

    • I dont blame them for hating the Irish. I talk to my friend overthere every so often and everytime he tells me how we’re behaving like wild animals there.

This can be applied to anyone anywhere including ireland so lets start moving away from the idea that this is an aussie only thing. Alcohol and violence is a big problem here but it is in most countries

Half my life in oz and cannot recall one instance where ive encountered hate or trouble for being irish. If you have then its probably a case of some bad luck in meeting up with unsavory people or you’ve been acting the bollox

The great majority of aussies love the irish people due to our mutual love of sport, grog, food and craic.

    • Irish working out there dont go too mad, they try to save a few bob… its when they go back packing when its crazy…backpacking is like rag week..but every day..and with sun…every nationality goes mad and behave like animals….except the Germans because they are too tight with money.
only reason we get noticed is that there is simply more Irish out there

    • Sorry to be a pedant, but it says in the article he went to icu ‘incubated’. Working in icu I find this quite funny cos incubated means in an incubator, like a neonate, as opposed to ‘intubated’ which means with a breathing tube to facilitate mechanical ventilation….

    • Why are people talking about the Aussies other than this incident happened in Australia. The article clearly states the other guys were from the Pacific Islands, that makes them Pacific Islanders not Aussie.

The last three stories I remember about violence towards the Irish in Australia one perpetrator was Aussie, one Irish and now Pacific Islanders.

Amazing how the minute there is a story about Oz there seems to be so many people with the opinion that Aussies are racist and violent bla bla bla but this is not reflected in the actual story nor the general attitude of Australia in relation to Irish workers. After all there was a story recently the Australia is sending the biggest contingent of recruiters next month to Ireland to get more Irish workers to emigrate.

Don’t be annoyed at Australia because a small minority of Irish giving the rest a bad name, it’s not Australia that’s giving them the bad name.

      Hey Cian,

Thanks for that. A couple of people had emailed too. That was the word used in the police statement so I had to check with them before changing it. Which it is now.

Thanks (just for future reference, there is a ‘Send a Correction’ button below the article which sends a mail directly to me – it’s quicker and easier for us).

  • Very sad news. Its a headline seen all too often here especially within sydney’s cbd.

Its becoming too dangerous to venture out late at night in some areas here as more often then not your going to be harrassed if your a women or intimidated/attacked if your a bloke. These guys should be charged with attempted murder

  • I’ve been living in Sydney for 5 yrs , it’s the same as any city in the world , this kind of sh1t happens everywhere . So before people start saying another Irish man attacked in oz , they don’t like the Irish , simply not true I’ve never once had a bad comment or gesture towards me .

    • So Australian are not one of the most racist nations on earth then?

    • As opposed to who Bernard , maybe you mean white European settlers towards the indigenous populations . Or is it the government and medias portrayal of people . Asylumn seekers are reffered to as boat people over here by the government , news and print media to try and dehumanise them . Divide and conquer my friend the world over .

    • I’ve lived in Brisbane for 13 years now, nothing but high regard for the Irish. My kids knock about with kids from many different backgrounds, no one bats an eyelid. Sydney late at night is no more dangerous than Eyre Square back home when everyone piles out of the pubs.

With so many young Irish over here the odds are that incidents like this will occur. Just because the guys who beat this poor fella to a pulp weren’t Irish doesn’t necessarily mean that it was racially provoked. To claim it was reflects more on the person making the presumption.

    • Cant understand that thinking and to be honest i think its an extremely unfair and unwarranted view to have on 21st Australia. Yes the coutry has an appalling past but in the last few decades there has been a great push to correct those hideous wrongs.

People from the world over, of all nationalities, creeds and backgrounds and are welcomed here!

For the most part everyone lives peacefully but your always going to have the hateful and ignorant. Thankfully i believe they are very much the minority

  • Hopefully he makes a full recovery soon. Based only on my experience there,Pacific Islanders and Irish people tend to clash for some reason. The bouncers at Scruffy Murphys are generally Pacific Islanders and have a general dislike towards Irish people. It’s worth saying that alot of Irish over there and the P.Islanders cannot handle their drink and can’t have a night out without a confrontational arguement and or fight at the end of it.

  • I hope he will be ok, no one wants to get news like that, when the family are so far away.

Australia, I know there is a bit of negativity towards Irish starting.

I have a family member in government in Australia, he has said that, there are too many young Australians out of work and that immigration will have to kick people out and stop more people coming in.

Maybe that hostility towards Irish is because some see them as part of the reason they can’t t work.

Not that it is right to be angry with someone or hurt someone. But just could be a reason for the conflicts lately between young Irish and Australians.

Wait until most of these people are sent home, the unemployment figure will go through the roof.

    • Oh I am not saying that sorry, I know that most Irish over there are in skilled jobs, with qualification. Im just saying maybe this is why there is the hostility towards the Irish. Not saying its right.
