LABOUR PARTY MEMBERS have been voting since 9 June for who they want to see lead their party – but we won’t know who they have chosen until early next month.

For now, the next in the series of Labour Party leadership hustings will take place tonight in Dublin’s Mansion House.

The hustings will be chaired by Party Chairperson Loraine Mulligan and there will be separate Leader and Deputy Leader debates.

What will happen tonight

Each Deputy Leadership hopeful – the candidates being Ciara Conway, Sean Sherlock, Alan Kelly and Michael McCarthy – will get to address the meeting for six minutes, after which will come questions from the audience.

Then, the two candidates for the Leadership – Alex White and Joan Burton – will each address the meeting for 10 minutes.

Again, they will be tasked with answering questions from the audience.

The hustings have already visited Galway, Cork and Portlaoise, and the first hustings kicked off in the Radisson Blu hotel at Dublin Airport earlier this month.

Things we learned at previous hustings

At the first meeting, there was a huge amount of discussion about Sinn Féin and the possibility of a future alliance with the party.

Alex White said he was in favour of a wealth tax – and that there was “no question” of cutting €2 billion in the next Budget.

There was widespread acknowledgement that Labour had made mistakes in government, while Burton said that recovery needs to be “felt in people’s pockets”.

Some party members expressed anger towards Labour, while there was discussion of communicating effectively in government (and the lack thereof), and what caused the election bloodbath.
