Completely agree with you. The video of the fix chasing the ball on the bed and the video with it on a leash made me very uncomfortable. They clearly want to be out in the wild. Loved the final video though :) adorable:)

Mary, when I was about 11, i rang the Meath SPCA one day with a notion to join up… the haughty-sounding woman on the phone asked me why i was interested…. i told her that i had just seen a pamphlet about fox-hunting and that i was horrified and angry in equal measure.. she then proceeded to berate me for “not knowing what i was talking about”.. she told me to go away and learn more about “animal welfare” and all that jazz… i immediately told me mam about this….turns out this woman on the phone was the head of the Meath Hunt… I wouldn’t make this up, but this is what you’re up against…I can tell you, it was an eye-opener..leave the sionnach alone!

Foxes have to be controlled in Ireland and in the UK, they have no predators to kill them! There used to be wolves in ireland but not anymore. If there are too many foxes they will decimate wild life in ireland.

Most people in the countryside understand this, its idiots from towns who do not understand the countryside do a lot of damage to the countryside. Example mink being released from fur farms a few years back into the countryside. They KILL FOR FUN they are vicious and will destroy a lot of wildlife!

Also non native grey squirrels are wiping out the native red squirrel! I humans don’t kill the mink an grey squirrel the the will thrive and do untold damage!!

Hrrrr. Wolves are lupine. Dogs, direct human-engineered descendants of wolves (with the same DNA) are canine.

Haven’t Akitas been historically bred to protect herds and people from the likes of foxes and other preying animals? Every animal has a right to be here, but it’s down to us to ensure that things don’t get out of control. You shouldn’t be able to buy a dog for €1,000+ and then preach to others about wanting to protect their own livestock.

Sorry to burst your bubble Anderias but not all animals “kill to survive” and I’m afraid the lovely fox is a prime example…if a fox gets into a chicken pen it will kill every single hen it’s just in the animals nature….nothing personal! I don’t think foxes are suitable for domestication. As for hunting there is absolutely no need in this day and age to use a real fox. The hunters can have their fun with scent dragging where a person goes off ahead with a synthetic fox scent for the dogs to follow unfortunately I believe it’s the blood of an animal some of these hunters want not a day of “sport”.

Well, there have been plenty of cases of foxes attacking children and getting into houses in urban areas over the last number of years, so it’s not exactly a moot point I was making. Add that to the fact that so many idiots exist amongst us and an article like this might be seen as a suggestion that they do make good pets.

I’m assuming it’s an oversight that this isn’t in the Daily Edge section of the site with all the other anthropomorphic nonsense.

Dogs were once wild and dangerous animals, some still are, but that’s CID they’re animals.

I think it be great if foxes started becoming domesticated pets, would certainly help then out seeing as the majority if urban foxes and starving and hungry.

The domestication of dogs has taken over 14,000 years to achieve, Johnathan; and as you say yourself, some are still not there. It’s not as simple as deciding to care for an animal plucked directly from the wild.

It’s taken millions of years to domesticate man and some are more dangerous than any animal… Boom boom ;-)

You can domesticate foxes in about 4 generations. You look for certain features in adults that point to ‘tame’ characteristics when selecting breeding pairs. The first generation will be aggressive and not want to be touched, the 4th generation will be excited when they see humans approaching and will jump all over them like dog pups do.S

baby Twins attacked in UK, fox came in front door upstairs and started mauling the baby girls.

I would think that if some of the people here had two baby girls and this happened they would have a different opinion!

As tragic as these incidences are, they are very uncommon. Isolated incidents like this do not warrant culling large numbers of an animal’s population. It is part-and-parcel of everyday life that we share this planet with (sometimes dangerous {including ourselves}) other animals.

P.S. Incidences such as these have increased in accordance with an increase in urban sprawl (i.e. as we degrade the natural world and spread, we remove habitats and foods sources for many animals {such as the fox}). It is not normal behaviour for a fox to enter a home and attach children, but when an animal is desperate, it acts out in an unpredictable manner.
