4 must-watch shows to look out for on Sky Atlantic this year

From captivating new dramas like Britannia to Westworld’s long-awaited second season.

IT’S ALWAYS TRICKY to predict what the year ahead might bring, but if you’re lucky enough to have Sky Atlantic, you can at least rest assured you’ll have no shortage of great TV.

With plenty of new Sky Original shows on the horizon for 2018 – including the anarchic drama Britannia, Lennie James’s Save Me, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s turn as playboy Patrick Melrose  – plus returning favourites such as Westworld, your to-watch list will be a long one this year.

Here are the shows we reckon everyone will be talking about…

Britannia

Sky Atlantic

On the night before the Solstice, Cait, a young member of Britannia’s Cantii tribe, awaits her initiation into womanhood. But as she does, hundreds of ships, bearing 20,000 Roman soldiers, descend on her nation’s shores, ready to attack in the name of Emperor Claudius.

The Roman invasion of Britain in 43AD has long been consigned to school history books, but this tale of Druids, Celts and Roman warriors is about to get the high-octane screen treatment.

With a creative team headed up by Spectre writer Jez Butterworth, Britannia is a tale of families ripped apart, cultures clashing, and fearsome men and women battling to save all that they know.

All episodes of Britannia will be available from Thursday January 18th, 2018, exclusively on Sky Atlantic.

Save Me

Sky Atlantic

From the makers of Line Of Duty comes a captivating new drama, featuring (and written by) Lennie James. Chancer Nelly has always been happy to coast through life, getting into scraps and charming a few ladies.

After he’s arrested for the suspected kidnapping of his estranged teenage daughter Jody, who he hasn’t seen for ten years, everything changes. Now all that matters is finding her.

As Jody’s mum – Nelly’s ex Claire, played by Suranne Jones – begins to fall apart, Nelly is thrust on a journey toward becoming a better man and atoning for his troubled past

Save Me comes exclusively to Sky Atlantic in February 2018.

Westworld – Season 2

Part sci-fi thriller, part Western, part dystopian drama, Westworld’s first season was one of 2016′s most talked-about shows, with a stellar cast including Anthony Hopkins and Evan Rachel Wood. Now it’s back for a second helping, picking up where the finale left off.

With the dust settling after a massive shooting and Westworld’s robotic hosts threatening to take hold, there are some crucial questions to be answered by the new episodes. Ben Barnes has already confirmed his return as Logan, while Ed Harris will also be back, and hopefully there’ll be a few more returning faces from Season One.

Coming soon to Sky Atlantic.

Patrick Melrose

See England’s most affable star in a new light, as Benedict Cumberbatch gears up to portray aristocratic playboy Patrick Melrose in a five-part drama of the same name. The ultimate antihero, Melrose’s outrageous exterior hides the effect of a life of substance abuse and childhood trauma.

This re-telling of Edward St Aubyn’s acclaimed novels has no shortage of creative talent behind it – it was written by author and screenwriter David Nicholls (One Day) and executive produced by Cumberbatch himself.

Coming soon to Sky Atlantic.
