No Syria buffer zone possible without UN resolution, says Turkish PM

Erdogan says Assad’s “political life is over” but Turkey cannot move to create safe zones for refugees inside Syria without UN backing.

TURKISH PRIME Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday said no steps could be taken to create safe zones to protect refugees inside Syria without a UN resolution.

“We cannot take such a step without any resolution at the UN Security Council,” Erdogan told Kanal Turk television channel.

His remarks came a day after Foreign Minister Davutoglu told the UN Security Council to “act without delay” to set up safe havens, warning that 80,000 Syrians were already in camps in Turkey, with 4,000 crossing the border daily.

But world powers failed to reach an agreement over Ankara’s proposal which would imply authorising a highly controversial protective military operation.

Erdogan said creating a buffer zone without a no-fly zone would be very risky.

“You cannot create a buffer zone without a no-fly zone in place,” he said. Turkey is home to more than 80,000 refugees and officials say around 20,000 Syrians are also living in flats or hotels around the country.

And thousands have been stranded on other side of the border waiting to be accommodated in camps yet to be built by the Turks.

Erdogan’s government has been at the forefront of international criticism of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad whose deadly crackdown on popular dissent has claimed more than 25,000 lives since protests erupted last year.

“Turkey is siding with the Syrian people, not with the cruel Bashar al-Assad regime,” said Erdogan.

“In my opinion, Assad’s political life is over.”

  • I thought the time of proxy-wars was over after the fall of the USSR, but sadly it’s back again.

  • Why is that American super war ship docked here.??? could it be over in Syria or doing some GOOD somewhere. Not that WAR ships are good anywhere but the Journal seems to love the American presence here in Ireland. Probably owned by the US of A.

    • Super warship, its a dock landing ship and a rather small and old one at that, and I don’t think it would do all that much good with only 400 marines with no air or logistical supports.
As for warships being no good anywhere, I think anyone sailing near Somalia would disagree with you and our own seem rather good at drug interdiction and bring in poachers.

  • Turkeys economy is reeling. This war they are engaged in is a war for profit on Turkeys part. It also seems to draw attention away from economy for Erdogen. Look up who gave Turkey tens of billions worth of loans without which they would have tanked.

    • Traditionally one waits for a country to actually engage in a war before accusing them of engaging in a war for profit, so far Turkey has done nothing but defend its boarders and honor its obligation under International law to accept and defend refugees.

    • Jesus Christ George! Why don’t you take a plane over to turkey and asked one of the 80,000 refugees how they feel about all this? I won’t comment as I’d rather hear from the people who have been displaced by Assad. He and his father have ran Syria for decades. So he’s ultimately responsible with what happens in Syria.

    • Declan. This so called uprising is being driven by Alqaeda terrorists backed by Saudi money. All being controlled by the US. But you keep swallowing the Fox/Sky BS. Assad may be no Saint but wait until these so call Alqaeda rebels start their ethnic cleansing. Just see what they did to the black Libyans but of course you won’t see that in the media

    • Turkey has been training these jihadists for months now. They are doing at a base just inside their border with Libya. There are reports of hundreds of Westerners in a province in Turkey which is close to Libya. They are training the rebels. They are CIA and members of other western spy agencies. Just in case you have not noticed Turkey is at war with Libya for months. Just because they have not come with out and declared war dies not mean they are not sending thousands of jihadists into Syria to cause mayhem.

    • By the way, Turkey is not honouring its obligations re Syrian refugees. They were planning to flood Europe with Syrian refugees until the Germans got wind and told the Greeks to put a few thousand police/soldiers at their border with Turkey. If Turkey had been honouring their obligations they would not have a had plan to use refugees as a political tool. They wanted to use the refugees as a tool to put political pressure on European countries re Syria.

    • Not necessarily saying you’re wrong, George. But you might want to provide sources for your claims.

    • @George – Turkey does not have a border with Libya. Not even nearly.

    • George, as said already, Turkey and Libya are quite a distance away and share no border. Reading your post I’m assuming that you meant Syria instead of Libya.

As for the flooding of Europe with Syrian refugees; it’s an interesting claim that I would like to read more about. Have you any links to sources that you can provide?

  • George, where did you learn geography? Turkey does not border Libya! Also it barely has a border with Greece. Did you learn your geography from fox news?
