5 outdoor activities to try if you don't consider yourself particularly athletic

Explore these beautiful landscapes at your own pace.

LOVE THE OUTDOORS but not such a fan of finding yourself in a sweat when you’re in it? Spending hours basking in some of Ireland’s most breathtaking forests, lakesides and walkways is a pleasure that should be accessible at any speed.

Some of the best ways to see the country’s beautiful waterways is while moving at a slightly slower pace, whether it’s on foot, by boat or on top of the wheels of an electric bike (it still definitely counts).

Here are some of the best ways to explore the incredible landscapes around the country without having to break a sweat, and at an Instagram-friendly velocity.

1. Do a cycle trail on electric bikes

Always wanted to feel just a little more wind in your hair, but a little less pain in your calves? There are trails all around the country that can be explored with the reassuring power of the engine underneath you.

In Leitrim for example, there are two looped routes past a number of lakes in Ballinamore (4.5km) and Drumleague (7.5 km), that can be explored by electric bike.

2. Find a walking trail that suits your own pace

If you don’t always fancy running through the countryside, think about gathering a group together to explore gorgeous lakes, canals and rivers at an easier pace, and at one you can actually catch up over.

There are a number of resources that round up and give detailed maps of trails according to length, difficulty, location and whether they are circular or linear, ensuring there is something that will suit any fitness ability. You can check out some of the loveliest walks near you here and here.

3. Do a guided canoe tour

Not sure white water rafting would be for you? If you’d prefer a more leisurely approach to your adventures on the water, try a guided canoe tour.

Not only will you get to learn about the area, you’ll also be able to take things at your own pace, meaning you’ll have enough breath to have a chat and point our your favourite parts of the trip too. You can check out where you can book one that wanders through the Shannon-Erne here.

4. Find your new favourite picnic spot

Sometimes some of the most memorable sights aren’t seen spinning by on a bike or trying to catch your breath in a canoe, they’re best enjoyed with a generous amount of tasty, picnic-friendly foods.

Set down for a moment and enjoy the scenery with a few of Ireland’s tastiest artisan products. Why not stock up before your walk at a local farmers’ market with home-baked bread, organic ham and chicken, homegrown salads and fresh berries? Some countryside views are far too picturesque not to pause for lunch beside.

5. Explore the woods from the top of a Segway

If you’d like a little help with your cross-country wandering, think about taking a guided Segway tour to explore your favourite waterside landscapes.

For example, Lough Key Forest and Activity Park in Co Roscommon offers a Woodland Segway tour, allowing visitors to sweep through the 350 acres of forest without having to set a foot on the ground.
