Man dies after being shot by British police

A witness claims police told James Wilson to “put the gun down”.

A MAN SHOT earlier in the week by police in England has died.

24-year-old James Wilson from South Shields near Newcastle was shot by Northumbria Police on Tuesday.

Police were responding to reports he had been seen with a handgun.

It is believed he was shot once in the chest by armed police.

The UK’s police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the incident and says a “non-police weapon was recovered from the scene”.

The Guardian quotes a local man who says his girlfriend heard police tell Wilson to “put the gun down”.

The IPCC is appealing for witnesses to the shooting.

IPCC Commissioner Carl Gumsley said:

“Our thoughts are with James’ friends and family at this very difficult time.”
