Rail track that was raised by 60 centimetres... is now 50 centimetres under water

The rail line between Limerick and Ennis will stay closed for another six weeks. At least.

PROSPECTIVE RAIL CUSTOMERS are being warned the line between Limerick and Ennis will stay closed for at least another six weeks, due to flooding in the Ballycar area.

According to Irish Rail:

“The line has flooded following a significant increase in water levels at Ballycar Lough due to the recent sustained heavy rainfall, and the slow draining nature of the karst landscape in the area.

“Should the recent rainfall patterns persist, this will extend significantly the duration of the closure of the rail line.”

Bus transfers will continued to operate between Limerick and Ennis for the duration of the closure —also stopping at Sixmilebridge. The buses are departing all stations on the route at the scheduled train times.

The track level has been raised by 60 centimetres at Ballycar over the last ten years to mitigate against the effects of flooding.

However, according to Irish Rail:

The current flood levels are at least 50 centimetres over the rail head and rising, resulting in the suspension of services since 2 February.

Further updates on the situation will be issued at the Irish Rail website and via Twitter.
