'You may be unknowingly shielding a killer' - Fresh appeal over murder of Raonaid Murray

The 17-year-old was stabbed to death just 500 metres from her home.

TOMORROW WILL MARK the 16th anniversary of the brutal murder of 17 year old Raonaid Murray in Glenageary, Dublin.

The teen was found just 500 metres from her home. She had been stabbed and slashed with a knife multiple times. No one has ever been charged over her murder.

Raonaid worked in a local clothes shop in Dun Laoghaire Shopping Centre and left work at 9pm on 3 September 1999. She went with a friend to Scott’s Public House in Dun Laoghaire and made arrangements to meet another friend at a night club later.

At 11.20pm she left the pub to go home and change for the night club, starting the 15 minute walk to her house. She never made it there.

People sitting in the back garden of a nearby house reported hearing a girl’s voice saying something they thought sounded like “leave me alone” and “go away”. They also heard a scream. The teen’s body was discovered at Silchester Crescent just after midnight.

Gardaí are made a number of appeals over the years, at one stage asserting the girl may have been seen arguing with a young man in Corrig Avenue that night.

Protecting the killer

Renewing the appeal again today, gardaí said someone knows who murdered the teenage girl and why. They said someone is “protecting the killer” and it is time for that person to make the call.

“Your silence has compounded the suffering of the Murray family since the murder of their daughter Raonaid on 4 September 1999,” they said in a statement.

Speaking at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station today, Detective Superintendent Kevin Dolan appealed for anyone with information or any person with doubts about the veracity of an alibi that was provided at the time to contact them.

“You may be unknowingly shielding a killer,” he said.

Raonaid’s family also appeal to the public for any information which may lead to the arrest of her killer. Gardaí said solving this murder is of the utmost priority for them and any information will be treated with absolute confidence.

Anyone with information can contact the Garda Incident Room at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station, phone 01-6665000 / 6665012 or alternatively the Garda Confidential line at 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
