IKEA flatpacks won't fit in the car? This may be the answer...

It’s our Gadget Of The Week

TRIPS TO IKEA can be stressful enough but getting to the car park and being unable to load your flat pack purchases safely and securely in your car can cause an actual meltdown. I know. I’ve been there.

Driving home in second gear because the coffee table of your dreams is blocking the gearbox is not much fun for you or your car. But this gadget of the week may help banish those transportation woes.

What is it?

The SeatRack Interior Cargo Rack (€167 including p & p) is a clever but pricey system that ensures your cargo gets from A to B safely and securely – with no need for you to go all MacGyver with string and duct tape. It’s like a roof rack that goes on the inside of your car!

What does it do?

Using the cargo bars and mounting posts with the straps and adapters, you remove your headrests and fit the system into the top of your seats. The system adjusts to fit most vehicles that have removable headrests and when in place can carry objects weighing up to 22.5kg (50lbs).

There is a removable protective cover that helps protect more fragile cargo and there are adapter sleeves to fit posts of varying diameters. You then strap your items down to the rack.

Why would I want it?

If you regularly carry bulky or awkward items like surfboards, fishing gear, timber, pipes or ladders this system makes it easy to tie down this sort of cargo in a way that won’t damage the car or obstruct any of driving controls.

What do users say?

The only reviews of the product we could find were on ToolGuyd.com and most of them thought it was a clever idea but too expensive.

Tim B was impressed, saying:

Wow… pretty ingenious idea!

And reviewer Stuart writes:

While you could always attach certain types of cargo to a roof rack, this system looks easier to use. There is a downside – you lose at least 2 seats when the SeatRack is used.
