You may know him from shows like The League and movies like Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
Today, the comedian is all over the news… but not for the reason you might expect.
The New York Times reports that Rannazzisi has admitted to lying about escaping 9/11. The comedian had previously claimed to have been working for Merrill Lynch on the 54th floor of the south tower.
On an episode of WTF with Marc Maron in 2009, Rannazzisi described escaping his office after the first tower got hit.
I was like, ‘Well, I’m going to check this thing out.’ So I went downstairs, walked outside, saw all the pandemonium and about five or six minutes later, bang.
Then I just started f**king booking it.
He went on to tell a version of this story in multiple interviews, according to The New York Times.
Yesterday the comedian admitted to fabricating the whole thing.
I was not at the Trade Center on that day. I don’t know why I said this. This was inexcusable. I am truly, truly sorry.
He also conceded that he had not been working in Merrill Lynch, which did not have offices in the World Trade Centre, and had actually been working in midtown Manhattan.
He went on to apologise for his remarks.
It was profoundly disrespectful to those who perished and those who lost loved ones. The stupidity and guilt I have felt for many years has not abated. It was an early taste of having a public persona, and I made a terrible mistake. All I can ask is for forgiveness.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, he is now the talk of Twitter.
