Rescue in Waterford City for man in the river at Rice Bridge

The man was spotted entering the water shortly before 9am.

A MAJOR RESCUE operation in ongoing in Waterford City after reports of a man entering the River Suir at Rice Bridge.

The operation is centred at The Quay near the main bridge entering the city across from Plunkett Station.

They follow a 999 call from a woman at about 8.45 am this morning who reported seeing a man entering the water.

Waterford City River Rescue was launched at about 08.56 am this morning and proceeded up river where it joined the search with Waterford City Fire Service.

The Rescue 117 Irish Coast Guard helicopter was also involved in sweeping the area but was stood down at about 10am.

In all, there are currently six boats involved in the search, three from Waterford Marine Search and Rescue, two from Waterford City Civil Defence and one more.

Darryl Barry of Waterford Marine Search and Rescue says that the search will continue into the evening depending on visibility and if required will resume again at first light tomorrow morning.
