6.9 earthquake hits off Papua New Guinea

AMERICAN AUTHORITIES report that an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale has occurred just off the coast of Papua New Guinea, and about 600 miles from the north-east coast of Australia. A quake of such a scale would undoubtedly raise fears of a tsunami.
