The man had been receiving medical attention at Cavan General Hospital.

THE 56-YEAR-old man who was arrested in connection with the death of mother-of-four Patricia Kearns last week has been released from Cavan General Hospital for questioning by gardaí.

The man had been receiving medical attention at a psychiatric unit at the hospital since being arrested in the early hours of Friday morning, after a tense stand-off with gardaí at The Square Bar. The 56-year-old had barricaded himself into the pub with a shotgun.

Shortly before the siege, 54-year-old Kearns had been found shot dead at a house nearby.

It is understood the man was released from hospital yesterday evening and can now be held for a further six days at Cavan Garda Station as his detention period was suspended while he was in hospital.
