Israel set for January election after dissolution of Knesset

A date has been set for an early general election after coalition partners reached a deadlock over of austerity measures for the country’s upcoming budget.

ISRAEL’S PARLIAMENT VOTED today to dissolve itself and hold early elections on January 22, a move championed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu whose coalition is leading in the opinion polls.

The dissolution of the Knesset was approved by 100 votes to none in a third reading after a lengthy session in the 120-seat chamber.

Last week Netanyahu announced he wanted to bring forward the election – originally scheduled for October 2013 – because of the current deadlock among coalition partners over the passage of a budget packed with austerity measures.

‘Security challenges’

Opinion polls suggest that Likud party leader Netanyahu and his coalition of right-wing and religious parties will win comfortably given the fragmented opposition, regional tensions and the world economic crisis.

“I’m asking to hold elections on Tuesday, January 22, 2013,” Netanyahu told the house at the start of the debate.

“In less than 100 days the people of Israel will decide who will lead them in the face of the greatest security challenges which we have known since the founding of the state; who will lead them in the face of the toughest economic crisis the world has known in the past 80 years,” he added.

Netanyahu has repeatedly said that the gravest strategic threat facing his country is a nuclear-armed Iran. The Islamic republic denies it wants nuclear weapons.

Israel, the Middle East’s sole, if undeclared, nuclear power, will not rule out military action to prevent Tehran obtaining such arms.

“Anyone who belittles the threat which a nuclear Iran poses to Israel is not worthy of leading Israel for even one day,” Netanyahu told the Knesset.

“Today we have the capabilities to act against Iran and its satellites; capabilities that we did not possess in the past,” he said, without elaborating.

Following the decision to call an election, the Knesset is immediately dissolved and an election recess comes into force, marking the official start of campaigning.

Austerity measures

A survey published last week by the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper found that Netanyahu and his allies were set to increase their number of seats to 68, while the opposition – comprising centrist, left-wing and Arab parties – would win just 52.

Netanyahu’s existing coalition, which includes the centrist Independence party headed by Defence Minister Ehud Barak, currently holds 66 seats.

The Israeli leader said his decision to call a snap election was driven by the deadlock among coalition partners over the passage of a budget packed with austerity measures.

But commentators said Netanyahu had called an early vote to capitalise on his current standing in the polls, which show him holding a commanding lead over any potential rivals for the premiership.

Netanyahu did suffer a political blow over the weekend with the unexpected departure of his very popular communications and social affairs minister Moshe Kahlon.

Kahlon has not explained his reasons for stepping down but media reports said he was upset that Netanyahu failed to promise him the finance portfolio in the event of an election victory.

“I have decided to take a break,” Kahlon, who headed his party list at the last elections in 2006, said in an open letter.

The next legislature will be the 19th in Israel’s history.

These peoples suffered terrible war persecution and were also dipossessed in the 20th century (I am sure I have not covered them all) and have moved on with their lives. Unfortunately the Palestinians were stabbed in the back by their brother Arabs and hung out to rot. They were unrealistic about what they could achieve in 1948 and they are still living in the past. They will be taken advantage of until they realise this.

  • Here come the ISPC extremists and their anti-Israel propaganda. Of course the Irish and “Palestinians” (Arabs) share a common struggle; makes perfect sense? Jihad/Islamic Domination and Irish Independence are just so “alike”?! Who cares if the Hebrews were kicked out of their homes centuries ago and had to flee to Europe where they were put in ovens because the Jews were “responsible” for Germany’s bad economy, poisoning the water, and controlling Germany. Al Qaeda-Hamas are clearly the “victims”; don’t let the “Zionist” media fool you that all the infidels being murdered are victims.

    • When did you recruit me into the ISPC, Kevin…and the only propaganda I see on the horizon is your customary spew of hasbara. Or are you ISPC?Was it self-referential?What does it stand for?Can you spell it out?

Do elaborate on your tendentious pre-emptive strike.

Or is your attempted intimidatory mission already accomplished?

    • @ Damien +1 million.

    • What are you on Kevin?

    • “Which the American tax payer has already paid for. Our T.V. which is government controlled tells everyone not to worry; everything is going to be just fine. We have a Black President now and he will fix everything. The truth is he has the same agenda as any President we have had for the past 20 years. To protect the Terrorist state of Israel with American tax payers dollars. Even though Israel has an arsenal which is never to be checked by the U.N. unlike Iran who is always being threatend. Israel has killed way more Arab women and children than the supposed 6 million Jews of Nazi Germany. They have their own DEATH CAMPS set up in the Gaza strip. While Americans never hear of it through our Media.”

This came from the K..K..K website, if you do not believe me I will provide the link. It sounds an awful lot like what the ISPC/pro-Palestine movement is saying. To be clear I have no problem with the Palestinians getting their own little state but only when they recognize Israel’s right to exist; they have not and constantly launch rockets at Israel and promote Nazism (that is not a metaphor they literally do with Mein Kampf and Swastikas)

    • @ Kevin Nazi

A pre-emptive strike? Oh, the irony!

    • Kevin,

Sorry to hear you’re suffering from Ostrich Syndrome! We all agree that the Holocaust was horrendous. But what the Israelis have done to the Palestinians is appalling and one of the greatest injustices in the modern world.

For example, if you knew anything about history, you’d know that when the newly formed state of Israel was founded in 1948, over 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes. Over 500 villages destroyed. And that’s the tip of the iceberg. One attempted ethnic cleansing cannot, in any way, justify another.

As for your ridiculous Al Qaeda-Hamas comment? What utter nonsense. The overwhelming majority of Palestinians in both Gaza and West Bank have no time for Al Qaeda; their aims and ideologies are wildly different from Hamas. You may disagree with their methods but Hamas is solely concerned with the plight of Palestine.

    • Hear hear, Ciara.

    • @Mark

      What is he on?
I’d guess its probably a payroll.

    • As I suspect may a few of those downthumbs.

Surely not all of us paddies approve of our passports being cloned for terrorist hits so we are ALL under suspicion when we travel?

Or even a majority. I know we’re slow, but the % is a wee bit unlikely.

And despite Kevin(Myarse?)Niazi’s twists I think most of us have enough of a residue of the history of our own invasion and colonial plantations to recognise the To Hell or To Gaza displacement of the Palestinians.
Having lived in apartheid South Africa for a couple of years I recognise racist features.

  • Maybe they could sell some nukes, or grow the domestic economy by building another huge wall?

  • As the G-D’s Holy Proverb says, “If a wiseman has an argument with a fool, the fool only rages and laughs and there is no quiet.”
My pearls are too precious to swine, and wisdom is too foolish for the fool. So amen to moving on…:-)

  • So true.

  • Also… You aren’t in Israel to hear on Arabic radio, every day, the PLO, Hamas, and yes Mr. Abbas, calling the “pstinians” to carry out violence on the Jews in Israel! Of course you don’t care, because your heart is no difference then a terrorist.

    • @Jan as I said, I am bemused. You are obviously unable to see the irony in your own childish accusations, especially the hate accusation. I am afraid your contribution shows that it is you that harbours a deep hatred. Your attitude is just the mirror image of the attitude of the terrorists you say you so despise. Extremism is a very dangerous thing it works both ways, which does not lead anywhere good. If my words are so meaningless to you why do you react so strongly and take them out of context? As for your accusations they ring so hollow. Keep your hatred; your vitriol speaks volumes for you, and hatred rots the vessel that holds it, I assure you I hold none.
Grow up, and experience some of the real world, maybe you will then realise that Israel is just a small part of it.
So until you have something positive and constructive to say on the matter this is me signing out for good.
      END OF MESSAGE OUT.

  • Soon Israel will have a leader who will finally stomp out the notion that there is such a place called an Arab State in an Israeli Nation!! Yahoooo!

    • And sooner or later Israel will so stupify itself with its own racist paranoid propaganda, just as Nazi germany did, that it will over-reach and destroy itself.

The problem becomes the extent of the collateral damage(again, as with fascistic regimes in Europe in the last century)inflicted globally.

      Pretty, it will not be.

    • @Jan your attitude reminds me of the delusions professed by people in a large European country in the 1930s.

    • Reply to 2 Israel haters in reply to my comments: bla! bla! bla! Your words mean nothing.

    • No, Jan, you’re too primitive to do rationality.

Rationalised ignorance would be about as high as you’d manage to climb.

    • Why thank you, Mr. Flint, being primitive in you eyes means I am not like you! Also Hitler to prove we Jews are primitive murdered 6 million of our own.

    • If you had two brain-cells to rub together you might get a spark that would show you the parallels betwen your ‘..soon Israel will have a leader who will stomp…’ and the mentality that elevated Hitler on his tide of hate.

I know plenty of non-primitive Jews, as I know multitudes of primitive Irish bigots. I don’t do your racist shit. Nor were Jews, despite the Zionist hasbara, his only victims.

  • It’s funny Damian, that you say those insults for when you have nothing to say, the only recourse you have is to insult and name call. Feels like grade school again. So childish. Hitler would love you if he were alive.

  • @ Niazi. Jerusalem is a divided city. Half of it is under administration of Palestinian authority. Ps everyone carries weapons in Israel- u can even buy guns in the bus depot in Tel Aviv- providing u have ID of course. There is tight security everywhere even going into a shopping centre it’s like airport security- scanners and all!

    • I know it is. They need weapons for the US embassy as well? They need to attack the American Embassy as well over a film? It’s obvious your anti-Israel so we wont be agreeing on much.

    • @Kevin
Being anti-war, anti-nuclear weaponry, and anti-racist/sectarian does not add up to automatic anti-Israel.

And even if you are anti Israel, because of its impostition as a colonial fortress in the black-gold well at the expense of the ethnically airbrushed Palestinians, that does not make you anti-semitic.

Some of us are just anti hypocrisy.
Such as non-signatory to anti-proliferation treaty, nuclear-armed Israel, pontificating against treaty signatory, and still open to inspection, non nuclear-armed Iran. And using a treaty it refuses to sign as a stick to beat a signatory. Sorry, Kevin, but some of us are cursed with an attention span slightly longer than a gnats eyebrow.

These are important issues. A little impartiality and recognition of historical reality, rather than uber-nationalist determination to allow point-of-the-gunbarrel-created facts-on the-ground drive the argumentation might be in order.

      RSVP.

  • And so the war plans are made and voted for.
If Romney wins in the US a war with Iran is imminent, if Obama wins, he’ll be drawn into a war he doesn’t want.

  • Oi veh iz Mir! This is about austerity not the intifada. Just scare tactics from Netenyahu …… The usual tactics used to get votes. If the borders were opened to Palestinian workers as they were pre 99, there would be a large cheap labour force to help economy grow

    • How are Palestinians not allowed into Israel? A month ago there were hundreds of them outside the US Embassy in Tel Aviv with weapons; while the Israeli Police had to stop them from trying to break into the US Embassy over the anti-Islam video. If you go to Jerusalem you will see a lot of Palestinians. Not to mention over here in NYC/Jersey City on 9-11-2001 they were out on the streets cheering and partying while they live comfortably and enjoy the advantages/benefits of America. If they hate America then it is beyond me why they decide to live in America.

    • A lot of people used to travel over the border to work every day. It doesn’t mean there are no Palestinians in Israel. Netanyahu is using the threat of Iran because most of the Palestinian threat has subsided. There are small rockets fired over border but usually not in populated areas- or those occupied mostly by Haredi as they can’t afford to live on larger urban centres

  • @Jan I am bemused by your attitude. You have obviously come on trying to provoke a negative response. You then accuse us of hating Israel. Where did I state that? Hate is a very strong word and emotion; you use it accusingly, in the wrong. I do not hate anyone, I have a very open attitude and I take and judge people as I find them no matter what their colour or creed is. You pre-judge me, why? what did I say? I will admit I did judge the childish attitude displayed in your post, rightly, show that comment to any right minded person and it would elicit a similar response. I would have used the same language if a Jordanian, Syrian or Palestinian had elicited those comments.
I am a realist and see the world as it is not as I wish it to be. I say it as I see it and some people do not like that. Obviously by the attitude you display you are one of them. Maybe when you grow up and realise that there is a real world out there full of people that bleed and hurt you will not be so smug and bigoted. I know that your attitude is not representative of the vast majority of the Israeli nation. So until you have something positive and constructive to say on the matter this is me signing out.

    • Mr. Gill, I could say to you that your comment addressed to me is amusing and fun to read as if I don’t feel the impact of them. The common expression that says “sticks and stones may break my bones but words should never hurt me,” is humanly a stupid lie. Your indifference to Israel is appalling and gross. My point is: for anyone to say Israel should be half for the Arabs and half for the Jew is comparable to Irish government saying they will split Ireland in half with the Arabs! You and every Irish citizen would scream against such a thing! Not only that, but if those Arabs have already proven they want the death of every Irish citizen, and in fact had already perpetrated terrorist acts, AND shown they truly were not for peace, then by golly, Mr. Gill, every Irish citizen would do everything to frustrate that! Mr. Gill, I truly feel the impact of your words, but they are meaningless and void. Hate is a strong word, and it is one that you carry deeply in your heart against my Israel, my people, and myself. Gimme a break, grow up and see the reality of your denial, then we can communicate on an adult level.

  • The great irony, among many, being that their venerated book of folk-history, the bible, holds the self delusion of overweening pride, or hubris, to be the primary sin of their satanic demon, and the cause of his downfall.

There is often a grain of truth in myth. Thats why, like cliches, they persist through time. It was a similar Manichaean Norse myth of Ragnarok that deranged Adolf and his followers, just as Mussolini was dazzled by the vision of resurrecting the glories of imperial Rome. Self-hypnosis, as Narcissus testified to the Greek mind, can be fatal.

  • Silence……
