Man killed in New York crane collapse

Fire department officials said efforts to remove four injured people were ‘complicated’ because of conditions at the scene.

ONE PERSON HAS been killed and four others injured in a crane collapse in New York city.

The huge crane was being used on a subway line extension in Manhattan when it came off its base and collapsed yesterday evening.

The cause of the incident is being investigated, and officials at the scene said it had broken into two sections measuring 40 feet (12 metres) and an 80 feet (24 metres).

One worker was pronounced dead at the scene. New York firefighters and emergency services helped to move the injured workers from the site to safety, though it was a complicated undertaking, as FDNY chief Bill Seeling explains in this AP report:
