Poll: Were the official 1916 centenary commemorations a success?

The build-up didn’t go quite to plan – but how do you think the year’s events worked out?

THE PREPARATIONS FOR the 1916 centenary celebrations weren’t exactly a roaring success – remember that disastrous GPO event where the Taoiseach and his ministers were heckled by protesters? Then there was the official 2016 video, slammed by historian Diarmaid Ferriter as “embarrassing unhistorical shit”.

However, when Easter finally rolled around this year the large-scale parade through Dublin city centre and the commemorations outside the GPO were hailed as a success by many observers.

Among the hundreds of other national and local events, praise was also heaped upon the Centenary concert staged by RTÉ at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre; some viewers reckoned it was a ‘Riverdance moment’ for the national broadcaster.

We’re asking: Do you think the official 1916 centenary celebrations were a success?
