Poll: Is the President above criticism for signing bills into law?

A protesters being unfair on Michael D Higgins?

A VIDEO OF anti-water-charge protesters verbally abusing President Michael D Higgins has reignited debate about whether criticism of the office is appropriate.

Once a President deems a bill to be constitutional they have a legal obligation to sign it, failure to do so would be unconstitutional.

But protesters outside Áras an Úachtaráin told TheJournal.ie last month that a president could make a conscientious objection to a bill and resign rather than sign it.

The choice not to, they say, makes criticism valid.

So today’s poll: Is the President above criticism for signing bills into law?

Poll Results:

No, they could make a conscientious objection. (2816)
Yes, they are bound by the Constitution. (2583)
No, but in this case criticism is unfair. (864)
Unsure. (244)
