Should Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan boycott RTÉ programme?

The two former Liverpool and Ireland stars are under pressure over proposed appearance on an RTÉ programme sponsored by The Irish Sun, which has been the subject of 22-year boycott by Liverpool supporters over its coverage of Hillsborough. Should they go ahead with the appearance?

FORMER IRELAND SOCCER internationals Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton are under pressure to withdraw from an RTÉ programme sponsored by The Irish Sun.

The two former Liverpool players have been criticised by fans after it emerged that the tabloid newspaper – which has been been the subject of a 22-year long boycott by Liverpool supporters and people on Merseyside - will sponsor a live edition of RTÉ’s Premier Soccer Saturday programme later this month.

The Sun has been boycotted over allegations it made about Liverpool supporters in the aftermath of the 1989 Hillsborough stadium disaster, in which 96 people were crushed to death.

Both players have said they would consult with RTÉ regarding the issue before making a decision but should they boycott the show in light of the controversy?

  • As so often, this is a case of flogged before proven guilty. Let them have the time to make a rational decision and make a categorical statement either way. I would hope that they would make the right decision – if not, I would lose much respect for 2 Liverpool stalwarts. I will not however slate them until they actually make an announcement.

  • “time to move on” – wtf?

  • I agree with both posters above. The question is rediculous. “Time to move on” is not how this should have been phrased.

I can only assume neither Houghton nor Whelan were aware of the show’s sponsors but now that they are they have no option but to withdraw from the panel. I also hope that there will be no Liverpool shirts in the audience on the night.

  • The headline for the poll is “Should Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan go ahead with RTÉ programme?”
Then the options for answering are “Yes, respect fans wishes” or “No, time to move on”. I think something should be changed here as it comes across as confusing. Obviously the question is asked again at the end of the article, but asked in a different manner.

For the record, I think they should boycott the program. It’s very ignorant of RTE to allow The Sun to sponsor them when 2 ex-Liverpool players will be on the panel.

  • Thanks everyone for your comments. To clarify we mean that people should move on from the boycott as opposed to moving on from events at Hillsborough. We’ve amended the poll as such. Thanks.

    • Now you’re after messing up the poll results Hugh. It looks like the majority are voting for them to go ahead with the poll, whereas the majority have voted against them going ahead!!! If you change the question in the title to “Should they boycott the event…” all will be fixed.

      Sigh!

  • I completely understand the hurt that The Sun caused at the time.

I just don’t believe a completely different group of journalists from a completely different country should be held accountable for it 22 years later.

    • Stephen Kelly: Will the Irish Sun run a story condemning the lies the English edition told 22 years ago, maybe as a front page story with “They Lied” as the headline, really going to town on the hurt it caused?

Will you include the details such as “In one shameful episode, a gang of Liverpool fans noticed the blouse of a girl trampled to death in the crush had risen above her breasts. As a policeman struggled in vain to revive her, they jeered: ‘Throw her up here and we will **** her.’”?

Will you explain how far from the truth this claim from “one furious policeman” was? “As we struggled in appalling conditions to save lives, fans standing further up the terrace were openly urinating on us and the bodies of the dead.”

Or would that be frowned upon by head office in London?

Will the Irish Sun be reporting about the protests of liverpool fans at Houghton & Whelan being on the Soccer Saturday Live show like The Irish Star, The Journal, Mirror etc or will it just be ignored cause you are the same company as the paper in question???

    • I’m a freelancer who covers GAA matches for The Irish Sun occasionally. I’m not employed by the Irish Sun nor am I privy to future editorials.

I don’t understand why the journalists at the Irish Sun should be forced to apologise for the actions of some people they have never met in their lives.

If somebody could put aside the dramatic rhetoric and explain that to me I’d be most grateful.

    • Stephen, no point arguing with a Liverpool fan. Logic is anathema to them.

  • I don’t think the two boys should not boycott the show because of the sponsor! They would have no part to play in the sponsorship deal or commercial aspects of the programme! In more it more than likely they would’ve agreed to present the show before a sponsor was even sought by RTE so I do think it’s unfair to expect the lads to give up a Job based on who the sponsor is. It was 22 years ago and answers still need to be answered in relation to what happened on that fateful April afternoon but the two lads should not be criticised for doing their job!

  • It should be boycotted anyway cos it’s absolute garbage.

  • I think Hugh you need to restart the poll again to clarify the situation better. The results are scewed as the majority of Reds who know of the boycott and don’t read the S*n know the score. Whelan was captain on the 15th April 1989 and both he also Houghton are well aware of the boycott.

Any comments from both players saying they are not aware it is just bollocks as they have appeared on the show and know who sponsors the program and part-sponsor the Irish Team.

  • People are still hung up about this? 22 years later! Most murderers don’t spend as much time paying for their crimes. People need to move on and stop being so hung up on the past. Failing that, if Liverpool fans still want to criticise the Sun, then how about they apologise for the Heysel disaster. Then at least their cries for an apology would be credible.

  • Ronnie Whelan was Liverpool Captain that day at Hillsborough & Ray Houghton was also on the pitch so they of all people should know what kind of lies the Sun Newspaper wrote about the Liverpool supporters on that day and also that there has been a 22 year buycott of this ”rag” newspaper. Even foreign players with liverpool know what papers they should give interviews to and what papers not to such as the ‘Sun’
And as for a comment below made by Stephen Kelly who says he works for the ‘Sun’ and that they are only a sister club, it seems you are uneducated in exactly the kind of deep lasting hurt this rag newspaper caused the families of the victims and the supporters to this day without even a proper apology.
I know for a fact I will never read it or any other liverpool fan.

  • Have I missed Kelvin McKenzie being appointed as editor of the Irish Sun?

The Irish Sun supports Irish jobs and Irish sport.

It’s beyond belief that people would hold them responsible for an editorial in a sister newspaper published over 20 years ago. Just absolutely ridiculous.

Maybe you could say I’m biased because I write for them. I’d say I’m biased because I have a rational brain.

    • It’s the same company Stephen with the same morals (or lack of)!
And to be honest, if you had a rational brain, I don’t think you would refer to the stuff that is found in the sun as ‘writing’! Tripe and garbage would be words I would use to describe it more logically!

    • Sorry but anyone who writes for a rag like The Sun cannot have a rational brain. Move papers dude!

    • Yeah it’s owned by the same parent company alright.

I guess that means Liverpool fans should also boycott Sky Digital, Fox News, 20th Century Fox (films and tv), National Geographic, FX, Hulu, Modern Fishing, Vogue, MySpace, The Sunday Times, New York Post, The Wall Street Journal etc etc

  • Whelan and Houghton, like so many other former players, are trading on their Liverpool careers to earn money. They are the ones who need to move on.

    • It’s very likely that they weren’t aware of the sponsorship when they took the job so perhaps you should reserve judgement until they talk to RTE and make a decision? Very unfair comments and Whelan in partciular probably felt this disaster a lot more than you or any Liverpool fan who wasn’t there that day.

  • I voted in favour because I feel very strongly that they should be encouraged to boycott RTÉ, and ANY other media organisation that ever interviews anyone from The Sun or any other Murdoch paper.

For too long these whining Scousers — and others such as the mind-numbingly boring Jim Beglin and that Scottish eejit with the moustache — have been appearing on our radio and tv stations. We should seize with both hands this wonderful opportunity to rid ourselves of the lot of them, especially on such a spurious ‘matter of principle’.

Once they’re gone, we can turn our attention to the Billo-Giles-Brady-Dunphy show RTÉ have been running during big matches. It’s worse than ‘Live at Three’, more like ‘Live from Lees Cross Nursing Home’. The sooner Matron comes and takes away their crayons forever the better.

  • Just in case anyone misinterpreted my original comment; I meant Whelan and Hougthton should move on from trading on their Liverpool careers – not move on from Hillsborough.

I was so trying to find a way to say move on, thought if i could find top ranked explanation remark from that newspaper as to how over 22 years staff changes, policy changes showed remorse and the intention to move forward with LFC, nothing came up.
Need to respect the fans here- or are you waiting for police to apologise first
