A MAN AND woman have been arrested after gardaí carrying out two separate searches in Co Louth recovered a firearm and a large number of prescription tablets on Tuesday.
Gardaí were carrying out the searches as part of an operation targeting dissident republican activity in the Drogheda area.
On Monday afternoon gardaí arrested a woman in her 30s after they stopped her car in the Crushrod Avenue area of Drogheda and found a large number of prescription tablets.
During the course of a follow-on search in Boyle O’Reilly Terrace, Drogheda a machine pistol and ammunition were found in a parked car at the property.
A man in his late 40s was arrested in Dundalk as part of additional follow-up searches at 9pm on Tuesday.
The man and woman are currently detained in Drogheda Garda Station under section 30 of the Offences against the state act 1939.
Garadí have said that the firearm is subject to a technical examination and investigations are ongoing.
