The weather warnings are back: Snow, ice and wind on the way over next 48 hours

Wintry showers and winds gusting up to 110km. Hello again, winter.

IN THE WORDS of Father Ted…

We’re not exactly New York.

Sure.

Sure, of course we’re not.

Residents of the northeast US are expecting around a metre of snow over the next few days (three feet, as they’d put it).

While we’re not expecting ANYTHING on that scale here, we’ll still see smaller accumulations of the white stuff in some areas.

Met Éireann issued a yellow alert snow-ice warning for the country at 7am.

According to the weather service:

Wintry showers will bring snow accumulations of up to 3 cm at lower levels during Wednesday and through Thursday, all areas at risk.

Showers will be most frequent in the west and north and over hills and mountains with higher accumulations expected there.

It’s not going to be cold and ‘crisp’ either. There’ll be strong winds to deal with.

According to the yellow wind warning, also issued at 7:

Southwest to west winds will reach mean speeds of between 50 and 65 km/h with gusts between 90 and 110 km/h during Wednesday.

Strongest at the coasts of the west and northwest.

Further snow showers are expected on Thursday, turning to rain by Friday.

Looking ahead to the weekend… Well, there’s not much respite in prospect:

On Saturday and over the weekend, it will continue very cold as the airflow turns northerly. Wintry showers will continue, mainly in exposed northern and western areas with good spells of sunshine and severe frosts and icy roads by night.

Still. It could be worse…
