Judge said Karen Buckley "put herself in a vulnerable position"

“It’s very, very worrying how young girls put themselves in such very, very vulnerable positions.”

A JUDGE IN the UK says that murdered Irish student Karen Buckley “put herself in a vulnerable position”.

District Court judge Nigel Carbury made the comments the day after the Cork woman’s body was found at a farm in Glasgow.

He was speaking as he sentenced another woman for an assault outside a bar.

The Telegraph quotes him as saying:

“I find it incredible that young people can get so drunk that they don’t even know who they’re with.

“One only has to think about the horrible situation in Glasgow to see how serious this could have been. It’s very, very worrying how young girls put themselves in such very, very vulnerable positions.”

His comments have been criticised by women’s groups in the UK, with Sarah Green of the End Violence Women Coalition telling The Telegraph.

“District Judge Nigel Cadbury seems to be perpetuating the idea that young women drinking alcohol put themselves at risk of attack.

“Even if it is not meant, this implies that sexual violence is in some way inevitable and it is women’s responsibility to avoid it. It makes the perpetrators of these crimes all but invisible.

The nurse was reported missing by her friends following a night out at a club near their flat, sparking a major police search.

Her body was found at a farm to the north of the city overnight.

A 21-year-old man, Alexander Pacteau, appeared in court in Glasgow last week charged with her murder.
