1. #PROPERTY TAX The deadline for paying the Property Tax falls at midnight tonight, and property owners who don’t pay it face tough penalties – including a court appearance. Interest will kick in at 12am tomorrow, followed by penalties.
2. #VOTING Three remaining Dublin councils are to have their say today on whether a plebiscite should be held on whether the capital should have a directly-elected mayor. The move has already been given backing by Dublin City Council.
3. #MIGRANTS Ireland sends more Asian people to jail for growing cannabis than Irish people, showing that we may be sending victims of slavery to prison, rather than helping to free them. People have been found malnourished and terrified in houses locked from the outside, said the Migrant Rights Centre.
4. #FATAL FIRE A 49-year-old man was fatally injured in a fire at a farmhouse at Coolshaghtena in Roscommon yesterday. The body remains at the scene as the house undergoes a garda technical examination.
5. #EXPLOSION A car was found on fire last night after a suspected explosion on Dublin’s Long Lane. A number of houses in the area were damaged and the Army bomb EOD team attended the scene. The road is still closed as gardaí investigate the circumstances.
6. #MALAYSIA The daughter of MH370′s pilot has accused the Daily Mail of “making up” an article in which the paper quoted her saying her father was unstable before the flight. Searches continue for the missing jet.
7. #GARDAGATE The Attorney General Máire Whelan formally instructed an Garda Siochana not to destroy tapes made in stations around the country, the Irish Times reports. Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil has tabled a motion of no confidence in Minister Alan Shatter, which will be discussed this week in the Dáil.
8. #CLIMATE CHANGE The UN says that rising carbon emissions will amplify the risk of conflict, hunger, floods and migration in the 21st century. Its new report says that if greenhouse gas emissions are left unchecked, they may cause trillions in damage to property and ecosystems.
9. #KOREA North and South Korea have traded live fire over their disputed maritime border. The action forced South Korean islanders to take shelter a day after Pyongyang drove up tensions by threatening a new nuclear test.
