Brendan Howlin thinks left-wing parties "thrive in chaos"

…and if those rumours of an €800 windfall for public servants are true.

PUBLIC EXPENDITURE AND Reform Minister Brendan Howlin stopped by for a High Table Interview today.

You can watch some of our wide-ranging interview below.

Here’s what we learned, aside from the fact he’s got moves:

bh newest

The minister is “really proud” of Labour and what they have achieved in office – recently launching 5 Days 5 Ways to highlight the party’s “record on reform”.

Howlin told us ultra-left parties and politicians are “professional agitators” who “thrive in chaos”.

He knows they’re becoming more popular – due in part to the public being angry at the government after years of austerity – but thinks people “are rational when they come to vote” and won’t necessarily support these groups on election day.

Watch Howlin describe why he feels Labour is a better option than Sinn Féin, and if he thinks Gerry Adams could be Taoiseach:

Video TheJournal.ie / YouTube

The Irish Times reported this morning that public servants are in for an €800 windfall after years of cutbacks, ahead of next week’s talks on pay restoration.

Is this figure in the right ball park?

Video TheJournal.ie / YouTube

We also asked Howlin about the controversial remarks made by Finance Minister Michael Noonan, who said some unemployed people are “allergic to work”.

Does he agree?

Video TheJournal.ie / YouTube

Finally, watch Howlin discuss why he’s nervous about the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum:

Video TheJournal.ie / YouTube

He said he’ll likely be voting No in the presidential age referendum, by the way – as he has “real doubts” about a 21-year-old running for president.

There’ll be more from our interview with Howlin over the coming days.

Public servants could be in for €800 windfall

Michael Noonan is copping a lot of flack for saying some people are ‘allergic to work’

It’s sad to think that things that where around so long that went through so much and now through supposedly better times can’t survive. I know it’s usually down to be over leverage but still sad all the same especially our independent country shops.

@tommy bailey: I don’t think any fair minded person would have any sympathy for the elimination of Hamas after the atrocities they committed, however you need to remember that long before the events of October 7th the Palestinian people men, women and children were dehumanised by a large section of Israeli citizens and treated as such. After all who voted in the most far right government in the history of the state of Israel some of who’s members want to exterminate the whole male Palestinian population.

@Justin Holtom: Shows what you know….canned food is a form ofea preservation that has been around for a couple of centuries, since the early 1800s and is so effective, it will be a long time before it will be surpassed. After all, once what is in your freezer defrosts in a power outage, it has to be used immediately or thrown away! canned goods, are a way the preserve out of season foods, and not worry about that kind of stuff.

Makes no sense whatsoever that this type of company could ever run out of cents.

It must have been abominably mismanaged in recent years. How they cannot be booming and drowning in profits following:
    - A 10-year-long Recession.
    - A Pandemic with plentiful panic buying, stockpiling, and the Consumer auto-response to hardships = retro’ comfort foods.
    - and A frikken Russian re-invasion into a former Soviet-occupied Nation…
    - …and resulting War Inflation triggering crushing Poverty and belt tightening.
    - OH! …and a Brexit-related British-centred crippling delinquency in farm worker supply and consequential lack of timely harvesting of fruit and veg’ crops leading to widespread fruit decay and supply deficits to *fresh* fruit/veg’ retailing. Plus a similar less severe but not insignificant anti-immigration suppression of supply farm staff/fruit pickers in other EU Nations (like Italy).

Tinned and Frozen should be BOOMING!!!
