- The organisers of the City of a Thousand Welcomes project have been overwhelmed with applications for those wanting to become goodwill ambassadors in Dublin. Organisers said they had hoped that about 1,000 people would apply over a three month period, but in fact more than 2,000 applied in just three weeks. All applicants are due to undergo garda vetting in the coming weeks.
- An average of ten insolvencies a day were recorded for Irish businesses in April, according to figures released byVision-net.ie. Iit has also been revealed that a high percentage of court judgements on unpaid debt were against consumers.
- A man in his mid-30s has been arrested following the discovery of a man’s body in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford this morning.
- The family of late broadcaster Gerry Ryan have announced plans to mark the first anniversary of his death tomorrow. His daughter, Lottie Ryan, says that the date will be used to celebrate his life.
- Many popular and widely used herbal medicines may be taken off the shelf this Sunday under a new regulatory system imposed by the EU. The Irish Medicines Board says that it has carried out research that shows that 77 percent of people think regulation of such remedies is important.
- Personal information has been made available on a local college network after a data breach at Trinity College Dublin, however Trinity says it doesn’t believe that privacy was compromised.
- Nestlé, the company that makes Milkybar products, has recalled a number of its Milkybar Buttons and Milkybar Discs products as a precautionary measure as “it has come to [their] attention that a very small number of packs could contain small pieces of rubber”.
- At least two people have been killed and 120 wounded, after Ugandan army troops police fired live bullets at rioting demonstrators on Friday in the largest anti-government protest in sub-Saharan Africa this year.Uganda’s president, Yoweri Museveni, has been in power for a quarter of a century.
- Think you know all there is to know about the royal wedding?
