I’m much more likely to ignore traffic lights on that grand canal route than on a bike lane that flows with traffic. Fact is, cyclists will continue to skip lights, so that needs to be taken into account designing routes, and two-way bike lanes, also for the reason that pedestrians are more likely to use them, are more dangerous for all than lanes joined to the road.

So take into account idiots who ignore lights when designing traffic systems ,how about fining them ?

Jeff, that’s not in the least bit practical. We both know cyclists jump red lights. What I’m saying is that bike lanes designed that introduce further lights and waits for cyclists are a bad idea, as is the case with two way bike lanes such as this.

if they stop putting the 5mm coating of red surface that disintegrates on them and leave them as normal road pavement like the road they’ll be fine and a hell of a lot cheaper

Jason, helmets are not a requirement by law in Ireland.

Of course the mere suggestion of people having to use helmets is foolish as cycling is not inherently dangerous, infact a helmet would safe far far more lives if motorists had to wear them while driving.

Barry I never said a thing about being law to wear a helmet nor that is should be, my point was that it would be nice to see a cycle group advocate wearing a bike helmet by having cyclist wear helmets in their press photos. I had a fall off my bike and hit my head off the kerb, my helmet spilt open but my head was fine, thanks helmet for saving my brain. I also had a car accident and my seat belt stopped my head hitting the wind screen, thanks seat belt for saving my brain. So point to any survey or article you want about bike helmets but you’ll not convince me that they are foolish, all you have done is convince me that you are idiotic.

If cycle lanes aren’t used by cyclists, it’s because there’s usually cars parked in them.

I just don’t get whats really going on with those who have a problem with cyclists. There’s just no rhyme nor reason to it….or at least no logical one.

There is a set of rules, they just aren’t properly enforced. Same for motorists.

Oh and Motor Tax isn’t ringfenced for just roads, its used towards everything just like so many other taxes. So if you are upset are about your tax being spent on cycle paths and the like then i guess your also upset about it being spent on education or the HSE etc etc.

Ironically, if the country had more people cycling and less people driving we’d have to spent less in the HSE as the country would be healthier.

I am a cyclist that also pays motor tax. A lot of cyclists have cars too.

So there should be a bike tax , sick of cyclists expecting everything and paying nothing

How about child benifit you recieve or education for your kids? should others that are childless have to pay it?
If you fall ill and the Health system looks after you should healthy people have to pay it?
If you fancy eating fatty foods should healthier (possibly cyclists) have to pay for your healthcare?
