THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT Minister Alan Kelly has announced a €7 million investment for cycling projects across the country.
Sixteen projects – both off road and on road – are due to be completed over the next two years, adding 334km of cycle routes to the national network.
Minister Kelly was in Ballymun today to launch National Bike Week, which takes place from 16 – 24 June.
The investment is part of a commitment in the programme for government which also saw a funding scheme launched earlier this year to help local authorities to deliver and improve cycling routes.
Off-road routes such as former rail lines and canal tow paths are to be transformed into cycling routes, as well as road-based projects. The minister said that developing the national network is important both to improve transport corridors and recreational and tourism amenities.
National Bike Week will include a night-time summer solstice cycle from Dundalk to Dublin on 21 June, a week long cycling festival in Galway and a cycle to work day.
