GARDAÍ HAVE RELEASED details of the traffic management measures being implemented for the state visits of Queen Elizabeth and President Barack Obama, and the Uefa Europa League Final, which will close roads in Dublin and ban parking in certain areas.
In a statement, gardaí also said there would be “periodic searches of pedestrians and vehicles” at key locations during the British monarch’s visit.
Between 17 – 20 May, the N7, N4, M50, Phoenix Park, and the north and south quays in Dublin – along with adjacent bridges and streets – will be temporarily closed at certain times. Further details of specific closures will be announced closer to the time, according to gardaí.
People in Dublin are advised to use public transport where possible on the 14 May due to parking restrictions that day, but gardaí say that “all business and commercial activity” is expected to continue as normal throughout the day.
Park and Ride facilities will remain in operation.
Some public transport routes may be affected by road closures for the state visits, and commuters are advised to check timetables during the period 14 – 20 May. A list of the parking restrictions being imposed on Dublin city centre locations during that period has been posted on the garda site.
Kildare
Gardaí are not planning to close any stretch of the M7/M9 when the Queen travels to Kildare on 19 May, but are warning motorists that there may be some delays as gardaí slow traffic down in key areas. Exits along the motorway will be closed during her visit.
There will be traffic diversions in the greater Kildare town area between 9am and 1pm on the day of the visit and the R413 will be closed from 9.30am to 3.30pm. It will reopen gradually, “in rolling locations”.
Service disruptions
Some patients of the Mercy University Hospital in Cork have had their out-patient appointments postponed due to increased security around the royal visit, according to the Examiner. The paper also says photo ID will be required by anyone wishing to gain access to the hospital on the day of the visit – 20 May – and people won’t be able to park in the area.
Dublin Zoo will be closed on the 17 and 23 May, but is open on the dates in between and is offering limited car parking for its visitors and a €2 discount on visitors who travel to the Zoo using public transport (proof of travel must be provided).
Dublin Bikes will also be affected by the state visits. Further updates will be posted on its website, but the company warns that the gardaí have already advised them that there will be “significant restrictions” in place on some of the scheme’s services.
