CUSTOMS OFFICERS HAVE seized more than 125,000 cigarettes and a large quantity of tobacco in a series of raids across Cork.

The raids yielded illicit tobacco products worth a total of more than €80,000.

In the largest seizure, gardaí and Revenue officials raided a home on the north side of Cork city on Thursday evening. They discovered 80,000 smuggled Richman cigarettes and 75kg of Samson tobacco concealed under a load of kindling.

The Revenue Service said this represented a potential loss of €42,000 in taxes to the Exchequer. A car and a commercial vehicle were impounded at the scene.

Two raids were carried out earlier today. In one, 14,340 cigarettes were seized from a Romanian man arriving at Cork airport on a flight from Paris.

The other was an operation at a private home in Carrigaline, where 9,500 cigarettes and 3kg of rolling tobacco were discovered.

On Thursday 17,400 cigarettes were found hidden in the luggage of two men, one Latvian and one Lithuanian, arriving on a flight from Lanzarote.  Another Latvian man, arriving from Barcelona, was found with 5,340 cigarettes also concealed in his luggage on January 26.

He was handed a six-month suspended sentence and a €1,500 fine after appearing in court yesterday charged with avoiding excise duty.

  • I actually don’t begrudge anyone anymore who gets cheap cigarettes, alcohol, diesel or anything that makes life a little easier, I used to have moral issues but not anymore.
This government are morally bankrupt and have lost all credibility.
The large portion of taxes raised seems to be feeding this massive debt that wasn’t the Irish peoples to start with, so stuff them.

  • There is absolutely nothing wrong with evading taxes when we’re being screwed by the government to repay the debts of a section of the country that went mad

  • @ Jay . I was watching programme the other night on tv3 I think, about counterfeit products. If you heard what was in the counterfeit cigarettes you’d probably give up straight away. Maybe they are scare mongering but I’d hate to take a chance. I agree prices are a joke in this country… Stop puffin ;-)

    • They are just scaremongering. The cigarettes are more often not bought legitimately in bulk, in poorer regions of Eastern Europe or Asia and then smuggled here to sell for the massive mark-up.
Why anyone would spend their time adding rat poison or shoe polish is beyond me.

    • tv3 was scaremongering most r just from duty free islands like Canaries counterfeit ones r getting rare it’s just duty free ones mostly now mostly Spanish pure propoganda that sadly a lot of people swallow.they also don’t tell u that tobacco bought in duty paid European countries is legal no matter what the amount if it’s for your own use.

    • Mensah. Excellent post. Your best by far. The next time I see those flipping spelling police criticising someone’s spelling I’m going to refer them to this post. Content lads.

Now who’s going to ring the Gardaí about these robbers in the Dáil?

  • I’ve said it before and I’m sure will say it again!!; the gov will continuously loose out on tax whilst they keep the prices here SO high. I’d much prefer to buy my Drum in my local supermarket (but it’s 19€ for 50g)- so when friends bring back baccy from the continent for me the same size is usually about 5€ yes FIVE euro. Why is anyone surprised by the fact that people will buy the cheaper imports. I still would be very slow to buy baccy from people on the street tho – big difference between brought-back-cheap baccy and the stuff that’s whipped up in concrete mixer in India or China or where-ever and not knowing what’s in that mix – UGH.

  • It’s way cheaper to buy fags in places like spain so don’t blame ppl if they bring back more then the aqquired amount. It’s way cheaper over there for drum and other cigerate brands so if they save a few quid so be it! I’m not a smoker but if i were i’d be dojng the same thing as others…
