A POLICE OFFICER in Florida has shot a family dog dead after it ran to greet him.

The dog, a bull terrier called Duchess, was shot three times by the police officer.

He had been knocking on the family’s door to tell them that their car door was open.

According to NBC South Florida, the dog’s owner Gillian Palacios is demanding an apology from the officer involved in the incident.

Speaking to the channel, Palacios said that she was in the house with her husband and two children at the time.

She was getting ready to take her son to school and was just about to head out the door when duchess squeezed past her.

Hearing the knock, Palacios opened the door and the animal ran out to greet the guest.

It is understood that the officer responsible has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Since the shooting a petition has been launched online calling for the dismissal of the police officer involved in the incident, with it having gathered more than 22,000 signatures so far.
