THE RAIN ISN’T the only thing pouring in Munich today after the mayor Christian Ude let out the traditional cry “O’zaptft is” (the keg is tapped) to open the world’s largest beer festival.
Oktoberfest, the 17-day event, kicked off once the first barrel was cracked open and a Mass (litre-sized glass) served to the State’s premier.
Millions of people from around the world are expected in the city’s 35 giant beer tents over the next three weeks. Between them, they will guzzle about 7.5 million litres of beer and eat more than 100 oxen and 50 calves.
Last year, punters paid about €9.20 for a Masskrug. This year, prices could rise to up to €9.50.
This is the 179th Oktoberfest.
