- The Gardaí and the HSE have launched two separate investigations after the body of an elderly man was found in Cavan General Hospital. A man has been arrested after the body was found in the psychiatric unit of the hospital.
- Businessman Seán Gallagher says he’s “delighted” to have won the support of Clare and Donegal County Councils in his bid to become an independent candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Gallagher has also announced this evening that he’s won the unanimous support of Roscommon County Council.
- The Health Minister James Reilly has warned the HSE that all hospitals and services must stay within their budgets for the remainder of the year. Meanwhile the board of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin is warning that it doesn’t have enough money to last the year, while the Taoiseach faced angry protesters in Athlone today as he confirmed that services at the emergency department of Roscommon County Hospital will be downgraded.
- The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, his son and his intelligence chief. Gaddafi is wanted for crimes against humanity carried out in the early days of the Libyan uprising.
- The managing director of an Irish oil and gas company which wants to drill for oil in the Porcupine Basin off the south west coast has said that Shell’s handling of the Corrib issue is a “case study in mismanagement”. David Horgan said that dealing with the concerns of local people is the company’s problem until those problems are sorted out, but that there will always be some “crackpots” about.
- Organisers of a distressed property auction coming up in July say that they’re “quietly confident” that most of the premises will sell (with pictures of some of the properties going under the hammer).
- The “killing fields” trial has opened in Cambodia, providing a last chance to bring the elderly leaders of the Khmer Rouge leadership to justice. It’s estimated that 1.7 million people died under the regime in the seventies. Here’s a timeline of the Khmer Rouge’s time in power.
