VIDEO: More bizarre weather for Donegal as twister hits Buncrana

Sea spouts and rope funnels are becoming more common in coastal locations.

A NUMBER OF reports were made to Met Éireann this morning about a possible twister in Donegal.

Witnesses to the event, understandably, presumed it was a tornado but it looks like it was actually a rope funnel, says Karl Mehlhorn of the Irish Weather Network.

If the twister had touched down on the sea, it would be called a water spout but if it reached land, it could officially be classified as a tornado.

Whichever it was, Niamh O’Raw from Umricam captured this amazing video footage of the event at about 11.30 am over Sliabh Sneacht on the Inishowen peninsula:

A spokesperson for Met Éireann told TheJournal.ie that conditions in the area would “tally with such an event”. At 15°C, it was relatively warm in the area and coupled with unstable air, the conditions would trigger the rope funnel.

Earlier this year, a similar event surprised the residents of Bray.
