Rainfall warning for 15 counties as impact of hurricane set to be felt in Ireland

‘Unsettled and changeable’ weather is on the way over the next few days, says Met Éireann.

A WEATHER WARNING has been put in place for a number of counties from tomorrow afternoon until Monday afternoon.

The warning comes as Hurricane Gert passed the US east coast last week and made its way to Iceland. The hurricane is expected to have lost strength by the time it gets close to Ireland, but it will still impact on Irish weather this weekend.

An earlier warning has been extended from five counties to 15.

Met Éireann has put in place a rainfall warning for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Clare and North Tipperary.

It says that:

Warm, humid conditions expected to develop through Sunday, lasting into the early days of next week, will bring spells of heavy rain leading to potential accumulations of 30 to 50mm, with highest totals in the mountains.

The warning kicks in at 12pm tomorrow until 4pm on Monday 21 August.

As for today, we can expect bright or sunny spells, and a largely dry night with clear spells. Outbreaks of rain begin tomorrow, and the weather looks “to remain changeable and unsettled” early next week.

Sunday night will be close and humid, with rain. The rain will be heavy and thundery in places, especially over parts of Connacht and west Ulster, with some local spot flooding. Widespread hill and coastal fog also. Lowest temperatures 12 to 15 C., in moderate south to southwest winds.
