7 foods that just taste better on Irish soil

Home or abroad, some things just have to be Irish.

IRELAND HAS SOME of the best food in the world.

We could be all modest about it, but sure why would we? We know it and as it’s often internationally lauded too – so does the rest of the world.

We’ve rounded up seven of those foods that just tastes so much better if they’re Irish.

1. Butter

To be fair, butter is pretty delicious already, but it has to be said that Irish butter is far and away the best. Why else would you find Irish butter stocked in supermarkets as far away as Los Angeles? We’ve seen it with our own eyes (and been delighted to find it).

2. Potatoes

We love our potatoes, it’s no lie. We would go as far as to say no country in the world can best us*. A big bag of floury goodness, great to eat alone topped just with butter, or else in one of the many many ways we’ve managed to turn them into a thing of even more greatness – like roasties, chips, mash, baked… We show you how to perfect the roastie here. You’re welcome.

3. Tea

You may be a devot-tea (yes, we went there) to your particular brand of tea but finding your favourite cuppa abroad isn’t always an easy feat. The fact of the matter is you’ll probably be bringing a box (or two) of tea with you on your holidays. And if you’ve moved away for a longer period of time, it’s imperative that any care packages you receive must have your favourite tea in them – no questions.

4. Shellfish

Ireland categorically has some of the best seafood in the world and while traditionally we’re not greater eaters of it, things are changing quite dramatically.

From finding Dublin Bay prawns in Sydney, Australia and Galway oysters in America, the rest of the world knows what took some of us a little longer to realise – we’re top of the shellfish pops.

4. A full Irish breakfast

We couldn’t single out one item from a traditional Irish breakfast so we included them all. Rashers, sausages, black pudding – oh my. It’s the best thing after a big night out, or on a lazy weekend morning. Nothing tops waking up to the smell of rashers wafting their way through the house.

In case you need it, we’ve a nice Bank Holiday breakfast brunch recipe here, just in time for the… bank holiday. Enjoy.

5. Milk

There must be something in the water, or the grass (is all that rain finally paying off?) but the milk produced in Ireland is just the best as evidenced by all the grown men drinking glasses of milk with their dinner.

As a result, the cheese and yoghurt produced from it get honorary mentions too.

6. Chocolate

We’ve got those cows to thank (again) for just how good our chocolate is. It’s hard to find the good stuff abroad and Australian and American versions just can’t compete with the utter nomness of Irish chocolate. Bring it with you or add it as a non-negotiable to that care package list if you’re living abroad.

You can thank us later.

7. Strawberries

Now that summer is here, strawberry season is also upon us. While we can now get strawberries year round flown in from Israel or China, nothing beats a good Irish strawberry. We could wax lyrical about how juicy and sweet they are, but we know you know – so go grab some.

Did we miss anything? What are your favourite Irish foods? Let us know in the comments below or join in the conversation on Twitter with the #goodfoodkarma.

Ireland may have some of the best food in the world but very little can beat an Italian wine. To celebrate the arrival of summer, SuperValu have a competition to win a trip to a weekend for two at the Mondo del Vino in Vernoa where you will get a tour of the renowned Poderi dal Nespoli vineyard. Just head here to enter – good luck!
