HEALTH INSURANCE PROVIDER Aviva has announced its second hike in premiums in six months – with the cost of its most popular hospital plan set to increase by nearly 10 per cent in two months’ time.

The Level 2 hospital plan will increase by 9.5 per cent for existing customers come September 1, while new customers will face higher premiums for the same cover, RTÉ reports.

That plan – which is Aviva’s most popular offering – will now cost existing customers €1,030 per year, while new customers will have to pay a massive €1,126 for the same plan.

The Irish Times explained that the comparable VHI Plan B costs €1,224 per year. Quinn Insurance’s similar offering, Essential Plus, costs €1,110.

Ciaran Hancock added that the move will affect around a quarter of Aviva’s 370,000 Irish customers.

The insurer told the Irish Independent that it blamed medical inflation for the price increases.
