#AskHamas is trending on Twitter but for all the wrong reasons

The group’s media adviser said the campaign was to clarify Hamas’ ideology.

THE MEDIA WING of Hamas announced a five-day social media campaign starting from today to try and improve its image.

The campaign ‘Hamas speaks’ is aimed at Europeans and was launched on Twitter on Thursday.

It said that senior members of the group would answer questions that used the hashtag #AskHamas.

According to Middle East Monitor, the group’s media adviser Taher Al-Nounou said the campaign was to clarify Hamas’ ideology.

The campaign is aimed at rejecting the labeling of the Palestinian resistance movement as ‘terrorists’

“It will take the form of questions and answers, as evidenced by the title #AskHamas, in order for the truth to reach the widest segment of ordinary Western people.”

The hashtag has started trending but almost all responses from social media users have been negative.

Social media analytics company Topsy is reporting that almost 52,000 tweets have been sent today alone.

Here’s a sample of what people have been posting:

The Twitter account has stopped posting for today but says it will start again tomorrow.
