A MAN HAS appeared in court in Longford charged with the rape of two young girls in Athlone at the weekend.
The 30-year-old was charged last night and brought before the court this morning. He cannot be named for legal reasons.
The man wore a black jacket and jeans during the hearing and made no reply when the charges were made against him, RTÉ reports.
Judge Seamus Hughes remanded him in custody to appear again at Harristown District Court in Castlerea on Friday morning.
There was a delay by gardaí in confirming the court venue for today’s hearing after a large gathering outside Athlone District Court and outside the town’s garda station yesterday.
Additional reporting, Daragh Brophy
