GARDAÍ HAVE THIS evening appealed for the mother of a baby girl whose body was found in Bray, county Wicklow, this morning to come forward to speak to them.
The baby girl’s body was discovered by a member of staff at the Greenstar recycling facility at 11am this morning. Speaking to reporters at Bray garda station this evening, Superintendent Pat Ward said the main focus is “on the mum of the baby girl”.
“We’re very, very concerned for the health and wellbeing of the mum,” he said.
Ward said it is “quite possible” the baby was stillborn, but that had not been fully established yet.
Either way, he said the baby’s mum will need medical attention.
“In that respect, we are making a heartfelt appeal for mum to contact us,” he said.
The superintendent said the woman could contact him directly at Bray garda station, or his colleague Sergeant Sorcha Fitzpatrick on 01 666 5300. She can also make contact through the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
The main priority in this case is for mum to contact us to get medical attention because obviously she is going to be in a very distressed state and she will need medical attention.
Early indications are that the baby was white and that she was carried to full term. Gardaí believe the child’s birth was “quite recent”. However, they have little at this early stage to indicate where she came from, as the facility where she was found receives waste from all over the country.
A postmortem to determine the baby girl’s cause of death will take place tomorrow, as well as a full search of the facility. The newborn’s remains have been removed to Loughlinstown Hospital.
