Beaumont Hospital Foundation charity 'does not pay top-ups'

The charity took out an ad in today’s Irish Independent saying it does not pay top-ups to any hospital staff.

A HOSPITAL CHARITY has taken out an ad in a national newspaper to confirm that its funds are not used to pay top-ups.

Beaumont Hospital Foundation took out the ad in the Irish Independent, sating that it “does not pay any salary top-ups to any hospital staff”.

The ad emerged a day after the Public Accounts Committee chair, John McGuinness, had called on the Central Remedial Clinic to to make a statement after the news broke that charitable money was used to top-up the salaries of senior staff.

Yesterday, the CEO of the Jack & Jill Foundation, Jonathan Irwin, said that he does not receive top-up payments, a bonus or pension.

In today’s ad, the MD of Beaumont Hospital Foundation, Padraic Walsh, said that he wanted to reassure its supporters “that the funds which they generously donate to BHF are paid out to support the purchase of vital equipment, the building of a day hospital which is about to open, the renovation of patient areas and research projects”.

The foundation said that the only staff costs it meets are those of its own employees, and funds donated by supporters do not pay any salary costs for Beaumont Hospital staff.

Minister for Public Expenditure, Brendan Howlin, has said that the government would find it ‘difficult’ to ensure salary compliance in organisations paid using public finances.

The HSE’s Director General, Tony O’Brien, said on Wednesday that only seven hospital agencies were found to be compliant with public pay policy, while some top-ups for hospital executives date back to 1996.
