Back to business at a Belfast shopping centre after a suspicious package was declared safe

Police emptied the Victoria Centre of shoppers after a suspect package was discovered. It follows an incident in Inchicore this morning, and a viable device found in Maynooth last night.

POLICE IN BELFAST say the security alert at the Victoria Square shopping centre in Belfast is now over.

The centre was evacuated earlier after a suspicious package was discovered, however a PSNI spokesperson now says that “nothing untoward” was found.

Earlier today a suspicious device found near the Blackhorse Luas stop in Inchicore was declared to be a hoax by the Army Bomb Disposal Team. Last night a viable IED was found in the luggage compartment of a bus travelling through Maynooth towards Dublin. The bus was evacuated outside the Glenroyal Hotel in Maynooth and a controlled explosion was carried out.

Another suspect package found on the street in Summerhill in Dublin was also declared to be a hoax.

A huge security operation is underway in Dublin for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II.
