A VIABLE EXPLOSIVE device was made safe by the Army Bomb Disposal Team in County Offaly overnight.
The Defence Forces deployed the Army Bomb Disposal Team in response to a request from the gardaí after a suspect device was found at a private residence in the rural Fivealley area, near Birr.
The team arrived on scene at 2.20 am. The army put up a cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety. A nearby building was also evacuated.
The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion. It was taken away for further examination. The army confirmed the bomb was viable.
Evidence will be handed over to the gardaí to assist them with their investigation.
The scene was declared safe at 3.10am.
