All but one cell occupied on St Patrick's Day

Gardaí said that there were no major incidents as half a million people took to the streets of Dublin.

GARDAÍ SAY THAT there were no major public order incidents in Dublin yesterday, but reports say that cells across the city were full by midnight.

The Garda Press Office told TheJournal.ie that they were not aware of any major public order offences as 500,000 people thronged the streets of the capital.

However, Garda sources indicate that by midnight last night, every cell in Garda stations across Dublin was full, bar one in Rathmines.

Sources say that despite individual incidents, the majority linked to alcohol, there were no major flashpoints across the city.

Worringly, a number of gardaí say that the only thing that has changed in recent years is the age profile of those in the middle of trouble in the city centre.

“It’s mostly 14 to 18 year olds running amok,” one member of the gardaí said.

“How parents allow kids [drink so much that they fall around] is beyond me.”

Suburban gardaí say that receiving prisoners from city centre stations wouldn’t be unheard of, it is far more prevalent around St Patrick’s Day.
