Community in anger after suspected drink-driver kills Dublin woman

Claire Hewitt was struck by a car close to her Clonsilla home.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY are in mourning following the death of a woman who was hit by a car in west Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The deceased has been named locally as Claire Hewitt, a mother of two and carer from Clonsilla.

A local source said she was walking home from a local pub with a friend when she was fatally struck, just yards from her home.

The second woman was seriously injured in the incident, which happened at around 2.40am on Hartstown Road.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink-driving and taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station.

He was later charged and released to appear before a sitting of Blanchardstown District Court later this month.

Independent councillor David McGuinness said the circumstances of Claire’s death had caused anger in the community.

Her wider group of friends are deeply upset by the situation … It’s a complete tragedy.

He added: “Her daughter is away at the moment, working on a cruise ship, so it’s an extremely difficult situation for the family.”

Gardaí have asked anyone with information about the collision to contact them at Blanchardstown Garda Station on 01-6667000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
