IT WILL BE a cold, bright and blustery day after the widespread rains of yesterday.

Met Éireann said that early frost should clear to a bright day with some blustery northwest winds.

As the morning progresses the rain will return with heavy and locally thundery showers, with some turning wintery – especially over northern and northwestern areas.

Showers will clear mostly over Munster and Leinster later today.

The night will bring very cold conditions. Frost will set in soon after dark and become severe as the night progresses.

There will be icy roads with some clear spells, but showers also.

Lowest temperatures will be 0 to -3 degrees.

Cold conditions will persist over the weekend, with frost and ice widespread.
